What Is Psychoeducational Testing?

Psychoeducational testing — sometimes called an educational evaluation or learning disability assessment — is a one-on-one process with a licensed psychologist to better understand how a person learns, thinks, and processes information.
Our evaluations measure:

  • Cognitive processing abilities (attention, memory, reasoning, and executive functioning)
  • Academic achievement in reading, writing, and math
  • Emotional, behavioral, and social functioning

These insights don’t mean something is “wrong.” Instead, they highlight a person’s strengths and challenges, providing a roadmap for school, home, and personal growth. Knowing how your child learns best can improve their confidence, academic success, and emotional well-being.

Who Can Benefit from a Psychoeducational Evaluation?

Psychoeducational testing is valuable for students who continue to struggle academically, socially, or behaviorally despite classroom accommodations.

You may consider an evaluation if your child:

  • Has ongoing difficulty focusing or staying organized
  • Shows frustration or a worsening attitude toward school
  • Struggles in one specific subject area
  • Performs poorly on tests despite studying
  • Appears bored or disengaged in class
  • Has frequent emotional outbursts or trouble self-regulating
  • Struggles to make or maintain friendships
  • Needs testing for gifted placement or Step Up for Students eligibility
