Why We Don’t Take Insurance

Last Updated on Oct 13, 2025

One of the most common questions we get at Thrive Therapy is: “Do you take insurance?”

It’s a fair question. Many people are used to pulling out their insurance card for medical care, so it can feel surprising when therapy works differently. We want to be upfront about this choice because it’s an intentional decision; one that protects your privacy, ensures quality care, and gives you the freedom to choose what’s best for your family.

Your Privacy Comes First

When you use insurance for therapy, the insurance company requires a mental health diagnosis (even for children) before they’ll consider covering any sessions. That diagnosis becomes a permanent part of you or your child’s medical record. For many clients, this is unnecessary and concerning, especially if you’re seeking support for life changes such as divorce, parenting stress, or grief, which don’t always require a clinical diagnosis.

By not billing insurance directly, we protect your right to privacy. What happens in the therapy room stays between you (or your child) and your therapist.

Freedom to Choose the Care You Need

Insurance companies often decide how many sessions they’ll cover, regardless of what you or your family actually needs. Sometimes they’ll approve only a handful of sessions, or none at all, based on criteria that have little to do with your unique situation.

At Thrive, your treatment plan is made by you and your therapist, not an insurance representative. This freedom allows us to focus on meaningful progress instead of worrying about session limits.

Quality Without Restrictions

Therapists who work with insurance panels are often required to follow strict rules that can get in the way of the therapeutic process. At Thrive, we want to offer specialized care, like play therapy, EMDR, and SSP, without outside restrictions.

Families and individuals come to us because of our expertise and reputation, not because we’re listed on an insurance company’s provider list. This means you’re matched with the therapist who best fits your needs, not just your insurance plan.

Avoiding Surprise Bills

Insurance isn’t always predictable. Even if sessions are initially approved, we’ve seen companies come back months later asking clients to repay costs due to technicalities or a coverage dispute. That creates stress at a time when you’re already working hard to take care of yourself or your family.

When you pay directly at Thrive, the cost is clear from the start. No hidden fees, no unexpected letters in the mail, just transparency.

Options for Out-of-Network Reimbursement

While we don’t bill insurance directly, many clients are able to use their out-of-network benefits to get partial reimbursement. Thrive can submit those claims to your insurance company on your behalf, saving you the stress of navigating the paperwork.

Like we said earlier, insurance companies will only process claims if a mental health diagnosis is included, even for out-of-network claims. This is their requirement (not ours) and it means your diagnosis will become part of your medical record if you choose to seek reimbursement.

For those who prefer to avoid a documented diagnosis, paying privately may be the better option.

To make therapy more accessible, we also accept:

  • Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) – use pre-tax dollars for sessions.
  • CareCredit – a healthcare credit card option that allows you to pay for sessions over time.
  • Step Up For Students (Unique Abilities Scholarship) – for families who qualify, this scholarship can help cover therapy costs.

Our goal is to make quality therapy as accessible as possible, while still protecting your privacy and giving you freedom of choice in your care.

The Bottom Line

We know therapy is an investment of both time and money. But it’s also an investment with lifelong returns. The skills, insight, and healing that come from therapy ripple into every part of life; relationships, work, school, and overall well-being. By choosing Thrive, you’re choosing care that prioritizes your growth and your future.
