What to Expect at Your First Appointment at Thrive Therapy

Last Updated on Aug 11, 2025

Taking the step to schedule therapy is a big decision, whether it’s for yourself, your child, or your whole family. It’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. At Thrive Therapy, we want you to know exactly what to expect so you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to begin.

A Warm Welcome From the Start

From the moment you walk through our doors, our goal is to make you feel at ease. Our offices are designed to be inviting with calm spaces where kids, teens, and adults alike can feel comfortable. Our friendly administrative staff will greet you, check you in, and answer any last-minute questions.

If you’re bringing your child, they’ll notice right away that the space is kid-friendly, with toys, games, and art supplies that help them feel safe and curious rather than anxious. Adults will appreciate the quiet, professional, and welcoming atmosphere.

Your First Appointment: The Intake

We call your first session the intake appointment. This is a chance to get to know your therapist, share what brought you in, and begin laying the foundation for therapy.

  • For Adults and Teens: You’ll meet with your therapist together to discuss goals, challenges, and background information.
  • For Children Under 12: The intake appointment is parent-only. This gives parents a private space to share history, concerns, and goals without placing pressure on the child. It also helps the therapist gather a full picture before meeting your child directly in the following session.

This intentional approach sets everyone up for success and ensures the therapist has the best information to guide treatment.

Meeting Your Therapist

Once it’s time for your intake (or your child’s first therapy session after the intake), your therapist will come to greet you. The first meeting is all about building a connection. Your therapist will:

  • Introduce themselves and explain how therapy works at Thrive.
  • Invite you to share what brought you in and what you hope to gain.
  • Answer any questions you may have about the process.

For children and teens, the therapist will spend time helping them get comfortable. Sometimes that means playing a game, drawing, or simply talking at their pace. For adults, the session is a chance to share openly and begin mapping out next steps.

What Happens in the First Session

Your first appointment is more of a getting-to-know-you session than a traditional “therapy session.” The focus is on:

  • Gathering information about your story, challenges, and goals.
  • Discussing what therapy might look like for you (or your child).
  • Identifying the first small steps toward progress.

Think of it as setting the foundation. Your therapist will explain their approach and collaborate with you to create a plan that feels right.

For Parents: What If My Child Doesn’t Talk?

It’s common for kids to feel shy at first. Don’t worry — our therapists are experts at helping children open up in their own time. Play, art, and other creative activities often serve as the doorway to connection. With patience and warmth, most kids settle in quickly and begin to look forward to sessions.

After the Appointment

At the end of your session, your therapist will summarize what was discussed and outline the next steps. This might include:

  • Confirming your next session.
  • Setting initial goals.
  • Offering strategies or resources to try between sessions.

If you’re a parent, your therapist may also talk with you briefly about how to support your child outside of sessions.

Our Commitment to You

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable — but you won’t have to do it alone. At Thrive Therapy, you’ll find a team that is compassionate, knowledgeable, and deeply invested in your growth. Whether you’re an adult seeking support for yourself or a parent seeking help for your child, our priority is to make you feel understood, supported, and hopeful.
